Pelion. The mountain of the Centaurs

Mount Pelion is about 370 km away from Athens and 250 km away from Thessaloniki. The nearest city is Volos, which is also the capital of Magnesia.

Pelion is one of the most popular destinations in Greece, due to its particular geographical position as it combines the beauty of the mountain and the sea .

Pelion is surrounded by the Aegean Sea and the Pagasitiκos gulf. Therefore, the visitor will find many beautiful beaches for swimming during summer time, which are accessible by car or motorbike. This is the reason why Pelion attracts tourism throughout the year.

Visitors will enjoy visiting the villages of Pelion, which are built among the lush green landscape. Most of these villages still preserve the traditional architecture with the buildings and cobbled paths, as well as the numerous natural springs with crystal clear running water.

Vyzitsa

Vyzitsa is a living museum of Pelion architecture. The whole settlement is a preserved settlement and is currently in a very good condition. It has a lot of renovated mansions, churches, a large network of cobbled pathways which are scattered around the village and an excellent natural environment, as well as a great view across the Pagasitikos Gulf and Pelion.

Vyzitsa is 30 kilometres from Volos, situated between Pinakates and Milies, at an altitude of 500 metres.

Visit the central square with its tall plane trees and the fresh water spring, the church of Agios Ioannis Prodromos, built in 1789, the basilica church of Zoodohos Pigis, built in 1725 and the church of Athonas.

Zagora

One of the biggest villages of Pelion, Zagora is popular for its cultural heritage from the 17th and 18th century, as well as, nowadays, for the production of quality fruits like apples and "firikia". It was built in the traditional Pelion architectural style, and sits at an altitude of approximately 480 metres. Zagora is at a distance from Volos of 47 kilometres, taking the road through Chania, and 83 kilometres, taking the road through Tsagkarada.

Visit the old churches, such as “Saviour Transfiguration” district of the Saviour, "Agia Kyriaki" (1740) with wood carvings, Agia Paraskevi (1803) and the chapel of the Prophet Elias (17th century) in the district Perachora. Moreover, visit the churches of St. Demetrius (17th century) and St. Nicholas (18th century).

Makrinitsa

At an altitude of 600 metres lies the famous village of Makrinitsa, the balcony or "eagle's lair" of Pelion. Makrinitsa was a large centre of education back in the 17th century, with many schools functioning at that time. The village is full of traditional cobbled paths connecting everything, even the highest and lowest parts of the settlement, which have a difference in altitude of up to 500 metres

Visit the fountain of "immortal water" with the splendid trees and the magnificent view across the city of Volos and the folklore museum with its collection of rare relics.

Milies

Milies is 28 km away from Volos, with a great mythological and historical tradition. It offers a large variety of things to see, a fact which has helped it to become one of the most significant Pelion destinations.

You will see well-preserved mansions, buildings and cobbled pathways which are scattered around the village, among which the historical pathway that connects the village square with the train station. You can also see fresh water springs, churches, apple trees, olive trees, chestnut trees and many beautiful gardens.

Visit the train station of “Mountzouris”, and the iron bridge, built in the early 20th century by Evaristo De Chirico.

Portaria

Portaria is a pretty mountain village, with an abundance of running water, built at an altitude of approximately 650 metres, 13 km from Volos and 12 km from the ski resort of Agriolefkes. The village has managed to maintain its traditional spirit, with beautiful stone houses and cobbled paths.

Visit the ‘Komboloi Museum’, with its impressive variety of the well-known ‘kombologia’ or ‘worry-beads’ as they are also called. Visit also the churches ‘Panagia Portarea’ (1276) with pictures of historical value and ‘Agios Nikolaos’ (1856) with embossed wall paintings in the sanctuary on the road to Hania.

Trikeri

Trikeri is located at the southern tip of Pelion. It is a beautiful place with picturesque cobbled streets leading to the nearby villages of "Agia Kyriaki" and "Kottes”, ideal for excursions throughout the year.

In Trikeri you can swim in the beach of "Alogoporos" or take a boat that will take you to the Old Trikeri, a small island with magnificent beaches.
Don’t miss the church of the Holy Trinity (18th century), the churche of St. Athanasius, the mansions of Koutmani, Koumpourelou, Kritikou and Vrynioti – Fortuna and the Lighthouse, 10 minutes walking from Geroplina where there is a permanent resident (lighthouse keeper).

Tsagkarada

Set at an altitude of 500 metres, and 54 kilometres from the city of Volos, you can find the beautiful village of Tsagarada. The village is perhaps the most famous in Pelion, with visitors from both Greece and abroad. The village is full of lush greenery, trees, flowers, gardens and fresh running water, and offers a magnificent view across the sparkling blue Aegean.

Do not miss the chance of a swim in the blue waters of the Aegean Sea. Visit Mylopotamos and Faskistra, with their crystal clear turquoise waters. Access to the beaches is by car, but you can try the traditional paths which descend from the village to the sea and offer unique views of the coast.

Horse riding


The paths of Mount Pelion are suitable for riding, as in old days horses were the way to travel and transport goods. Many trails are still in very good condition in beautiful natural surroundings, attracting the friends of horse riding.

Skiing


The Pelion ski resort "Agriolefkes" is 27 km from Volos and is located at an altitude of 1,471 metres on Mount Pelion.

The resort comprises 6 tracks, with a total length of 12,500 metres.

There is one 250-metre track, ideal for beginners, four tracks which are of moderate- to high-difficulty and one 5,000m “endurance” track.

Saranda

One of the most famous beaches in Pelion, with turquoise waters.

Agios Ioannis

Also a very popular beach in Pelion side of the Aegean Sea which attracts large crowds in summer, with its hotels, camping, cafes, restaurants and shops.

Afissos

The beaches of Abovos and Kaliftheri attract many visitors. Beaches are ideal for families with young children, because they have fine sand, gentle and crystal clear waters.

Kala Nera

One of the most tourist beaches of Pagasitikos Gulf, awarded with the blue flag. Hotels, restaurants, cafes and shops are available in the area.

Castri

On the Aegean sea side, a sandy beach that attracts many friends of wind surfing.

Lambinou

A beautiful and picturesque bay, with clear waters and an impressive rock formation.

Mikro

Mikro is a small village on the side of the Aegean, with a few restaurants that operate only in summer. It is very picturesque sandy beach, surrounded by trees and beautiful vegetation.

Milopotamos

Very famous beach, with blue waters, beautiful rock formations. Very crowdy during the summer. A must visit.

Damouhari

Perhaps one the most famous beaches in Greece, where some of the spectacular views of the famous Hollywood movie 'Mama Mia » were filmed. It is a very picturesque fishing village with green and beautiful landscape. The sea is crystal clear.

Paltsi

Located on the side of the Aegean, this beautiful and quiet sandy beach is ideal for relaxing moments by the sea.

Papa Nero

Next to Agios Ioannis you will find this huge sandy beach.

Fakistra

Also a very famous beach in Pelion. The landscape is very impressive, very green and beautiful rock formations and crystal clear waters.

Horefto

A very beautiful beach, ideal for relaxation.

Train of Pelion or "Moutzouris"

One of the main attractions of Pelion that no visitor should miss.

The designer and supervisor of the works was Evaristo De Chirico, the father of the famous surrealist painter Giorgio de Chirico. Italian workers and Pelion builders were used to carry out the construction work. The result, even today, is considered amazing, not only in terms of the perfection of the construction, but also with regards to the way the whole construction is integrated into the environment. This railway route is now one of the most famous in the world because of its outstanding beauty.
 
It starts from Lechonia and ends to Miliess, a wonderful journey to the mountain through the lush scenery of Pelion, and with stunning views over the Pagasitikos gulf.

The train runs daily during the summer months.
